  • Tain Thistle retain league title

Tain Thistle have been crowned Ross-shire Welfare league champions for the second year running following a 2-1 win at Alness on Wednesday night.

An opening goal from Mark Lamont gave Tain the lead towards the end of a frenetic first half played in wet conditions, as he slipped the ball underneath Andrew Maitland to round off a back and forth period of play between the sides. Alness pulled a goal back with a well taken header shortly after to end the half at 1-1.

A draw would have been enough to see Thistle clear of Contin on route to the championship, however Cammy Mackintosh soon made sure of the points with a headed goal from a Daniel Christie corner to go 2-1 ahead. It wasn't for the lack of trying as Thistle tried to close the game out, with Lamont missing a hatful of chances towards the end.  Nevertheless, the Jags saw the game out and referee Eric Robertson duly blew his whistle to draw a close to a long and closely fought league campaign.

Thistle will have to wait until Saturday to be re-presented with their league shield.  Presentations are scheduled to take place at the Railway Hotel following the annual "1st vs 2nd" Charity Shield friendly match at the Links.
