The Homecoming Cup
| Tain Thistle's contribution to the Homecoming Scotland campaign which began in 2008 was unveiled in April of 2009 in the form of the Homecoming Cup. The cup, to be first contested between Tain Thistle and a team of Naval men from the HMS Sutherland, marked Tain football's contribution to Scotland's first ever Homecoming year.
Homecoming Scotland is a Scottish Government initiative managed by EventScotland in partnership with VisitScotland, to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Scotland's national poet, Robert Burns. From Burns night to St Andrew's Day, a country wide programme of exciting and inspirational events and activities will celebrate some of Scotland's great contributions to the world: Burns himself, Whisky, Golf, Great Minds and Innovations, and our rich culture and heritage. Thistle successfuly won the Homecoming Cup, defeating a fit and energetic HMS Sutherland side by 5 goals to 1. As well as the trophy, team captain Paul Cowie accepted the ship's plaque on the day, from the captain of the HMS Sutherland side. It is the intention of the Thistle committee to aim to contest the cup on a semi annual basis against visiting ships or servicemen, in the years to come. |
